Unlike traditional musical scores, video game soundtracks are designed to flexibly react to the player's unpredictable inputs.  This is similar to the avant-guard "aleatoric music" popularized by Cage and Stockhausen in the 1950s.  In aleatoric music, elements of the composition are left to chance or to the choices of the performers and, in the case of video game soundtracks, changes to the composition/tempo/intensity of the music are the result of the player's movements through the world.  The soundtrack must therefore be composed of individual flexible and adaptive discrete components like the tentacles of an octopus.  The result is an intelligent, ever-shifting soundscape where no two "performances" are alike.

A classic example of this is Castlevania Symphony of the Night for the PS1. Michiru Yamane's work on the 1997 release is considered notable and is heavily influenced by Johann Sebastian Bach.
